L’applicazione dei dazi commerciali ha l’effetto di rendere più costose le merci importate con impatto negativo sulla marginalità delle aziende o con impatto al rialzo sui prezzi al consumo. La prima lettura del PIL del secondo trimestre ha registrato un +2,8%, il doppio rispetto al trimestre precedente e significativamente migliore del 2,0% previsto. Tuttavia, quasi la metà di questo aumento è dovuto all'accumulo di scorte (0,8%) e all'aumento della spesa pubblica (+0,5%). In particolare, si è registrato un balzo in avanti degli investimenti privati (+0,6%), in parte trainati dal boom degli investimenti nell'intelligenza artificiale. Al contrario, altri dati, come quelli relativi al mercato immobiliare, alle richieste di disoccupazione e a vari indicatori di fiducia, sono stati inferiori alle aspettative. Questa serie di dati economici contrastanti crea uno «scenario perfetto» per la riduzione dei tassi di interesse da parte della Federal Reserve. Come Powell ha più volte ricordato, mantenere i tassi fermi in un contesto di inflazione in calo implica una politica monetaria sempre più restrittiva. Con il raffreddamento dell'economia e la ripresa della tendenza al ribasso dell'inflazione, il duplice mandato di promuovere la crescita e tenere sotto controllo l'inflazione impone alla Federal Reserve di dare maggiore peso al rischio di provocare un rallentamento eccessivo e non necessario dell'attività economica. Non sorprende quindi che l'avvertimento sulla necessità di avere un po' di pazienza abbia raffreddato gli entusiasmi. La correzione che ne è seguita è stata abbastanza profonda che oggi l'asticella è molto più a portata di mano. Ne consegue che il timing, l’entità e la durata dei tagli dipende, al momento, solo dalla situazione dell’inflazione. Infatti, Powell, avrebbe poi affermato che se l’inflazione fosse ancora “appiccicosa”, allora sarà necessario attendere ancora. Nel frattempo, il mercato prezza già un taglio pieno dei tassi a settembre e quasi un altro taglio a novembre per poi arrivare a 2 tagli e mezzo per la scadenza di dicembre. Prezzare fino a tre tagli da qua a dicembre sembra troppo ottimistico, considerando che, nonostante quanto detto ieri da Powell, per adesso non c’è alcuna certezza che un taglio a settembre venga effettuato.
